Why drawings matter

Figures carry legal weight, from examination to enforcement.

Drawings clarify the specification and claims, help examiners understand the invention quickly, and for design applications they define the claim itself. They are often central to prosecution and to any later dispute.

  • Support the claims

Show the technical features exactly as the claims describe them.

  • Speed up examination

Help examiners and third parties understand complex inventions.

  • Define design scope

In a design application, the drawings are the claim.

  • Evidence in disputes

Clear figures serve as visual evidence in enforcement and litigation.

Non-compliant drawings are a common cause of formality objections, which add cost and delay to prosecution across a portfolio.

01What is the purpose of patent drawings?

They show the structure, operation and distinctive features of the invention, so the examiner can understand it quickly and the claims are clearly supported.

02Are drawings required for every application?

Drawings are required wherever they are needed to understand the invention, which covers most mechanical, electrical and device inventions, and they are always required for design applications. Even where optional, good drawings make examination easier.

03What do you need from us to start?

The specification or claims, plus whatever source material you have: CAD files, sketches, photos or a prototype. We confirm the figure list with you before drafting.

04How long do patent drawings take?

High-quality drafts usually take a few days. The exact time depends on the number and complexity of figures and how quickly source material and comments come in.

05Can you fix drawings after an office objection?

Yes. We review the objection, prepare corrected replacement sheets to the office's rules and keep them consistent with the filed specification.
